The Perioperative Symptom Severity of Higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Scores Between Genders in Single-Level Lumbar Fusion

Abstract: Background: Preoperative depression is associated with increased perioperative pain, worse physical function, reduced quality of life, and inferior outcomes. Few studies have evaluated depressive symptoms between genders for individuals undergoing minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF). The purpose of this investigation was to assess the severity of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores among patients with depressive symptoms before and after single-level MIS TLIF.Methods:… Show more

“…We found that men had higher SBT scores than women postoperatively, which contrasts with recent reports that gender was not a risk factor for psychological distress (depression) symptoms experienced in patients after lumbar spine fusion surgery [22] . The explanation for our findings is uncertain but it is possible for gender differences to reduce over time, leading to more comparable scores between genders over the long term [23] .…”

“…After removing duplicates, 3813 articles were screened, leaving 207 for full-text review. Among these studies, 44 met the eligibility criteria; each study is described in eTable 5 in Supplement 1 . Overall, 21 452 patients were included, of whom there were 11 747 females (55%) and 9705 males (45%) with a mean (SD) age of 57 (8) years.…”

“…Whereas, the latest research suggests that gender does not differentiate the symptoms of depression in patients with pain in the lumbar spine during neurosurgical treatment. However, a relatively small group of patients was covered, hence the reported effects seem to require further empirical verification [34].…”
