The Phanuromyia galeata species group (Hymenoptera, Platygastridae, Telenominae): shining a lantern into an unexplored corner of Neotropical diversity

Abstract: The Phanuromyia galeata species group is delineated and its species richness explored for the first time (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae, Telenominae). Fifteen species are described, all of which are new: Phanuromyia comata Nesheim & Masner, sp. n. (Brazil), P. constellata Nesheim, sp. n. (Paraguay), P. corys Nesheim & Masner, sp. n. (Brazil), P. cranos Nesheim & Masner, sp. n. (Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana), P. cudo Nesheim & Masner, sp. n. (Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, … Show more

“…Of these, 26 species are Palearctic, 20 Neotropical,3 Nearctic,13 Oriental and 4 Australian. No Afrotropical species of Phanuromyia have so far been described (Johnson 1992;Johnson and Musetti 2003;Mohanraj 2014, 2019;Nesheim et al 2017;Nam et al 2020; Ohio State University's Museum of Biological Diversity database 2021). “…In the Neotropics Phanuromyia is the most common genus of Telenominae and it is supposed to be more prevalent and diverse than Telenomus s.str. (Nesheim et al 2017). Among the 13 Oriental species of Phanuromyia, one species each was described from Indonesia+Malaysia (Johnson and Musetti 2003) and Vietnam (Nam et al 2020) and the 11 remaining species from India Mohanraj 2014, 2019).…”

“…With 60 described species, Phanuromyia is a moderately large genus, and one that is projected to contain many undescribed species. It is distributed worldwide, and its members are known to parasitize the eggs of Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera), including Issidae, Fulgoridae and Flatidae (Johnson & Musetti, 2003, Nesheim et al, 2017. Here, we describe a new species of Phaunuromyia attacking the eggs of R. shantungensis from South Korea and China, which is a potential biological control agent of ricaniid planthoppers.…”
