Editor's note: Marie Manthey, publisher of Creative Nursing Journal, is the founder of the concept of primary nursing. We were gratified to see the following excerpted article presented at the International Council of Nursing in 2001. From this study, primary nursing seemed to be centered around the nurse-patient relationship and its effects on the primary nurse. Eight themes emerged from this study. The themes seemed to be interdependent and support each other, but participants also seemed to experience contradictions. Following are the themes.
