The photomorphogenic factors UV-B RECEPTOR 1, ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5, and HY5 HOMOLOGUE are part of the UV-B signalling pathway in grapevine and mediate flavonol accumulation in response to the environment

Abstract: By performing molecular studies coupled to radiation experiments and in silico systems analyses, we have ascertained the role of the grapevine UV-B receptor and two HY5 homologues in regulating flavonol synthesis.

“…Our recent work proposed that VviHYH may fulfil both co-operative and partially redundant roles with VviHY5 during both grapevine photomorphogenic growth, berry development, and under stress 29 , 67 . Supporting this, many genes involved in light- and chloroplast-related functions were densely connected the VviHYH subnetwork ( k  =   2) of Module I (Fig.…”

“…The strong presence of the G-box CRE may imply a co-operative role of other bZIP TFs in its regulation, such as HY5 51 . This has been shown for VviGT5 , which is up-regulated in a grape HY5 transient expression assay, 29 although VviHYH might also be involved in VviGT5 regulation. Expression of module genes was largely down-regulated during the early stages (12–24 hours post-inoculation, hpi) of leaves infected with P. viticola and E. necator , spider-mites, as well as berries infected with B. cinerea at the late stages of berry development (Fig.…”

“…Another gene worth mentioning for the highest correlation of expression with VvWRKY26 is UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 ( UVR8 ), a photoreceptor that induces changes in gene expression after absorption of UV-B rays mediating the photomorphogenic response (Binkert et al, 2014; Carbonell-Bejerano et al, 2014; Liu et al, 2015; Yin et al, 2015; Loyola et al, 2016). …”

“…6. Genes that were identified as low-temperature-inducible, light-inducible, and low-temperature plus light-inducible in 'Pione' (Azuma et al, 2015b (Loyola et al, 2016). In addition, the grape berry UV-B response machinery favors flavonoid accumulation by activating HY5 in response to UV-B exposure.…”
