Specifically, the effect that these objects and elements might have on one's susceptibility to social influence in a virtual space has not been investigated. A mechanism is proposed that leads to the hypothesis that as colors, textures, and objects are added to virtual space, then occupants or observers of that space become more likely to be influenced by other people in that space. While the participants who observed virtual spaces with colors, textures, and objects were more likely to be influenced than participants who observed the same spaces without colors, textures, and objects, the social influence measure was not significantly different across condition. An interesting finding, however, is that more influence occurred across all conditions than would have been expected in a face-to-face setting, as opposed to a computer-mediated setting. More research is warranted to understand how social psychological processes operate in computer-mediated settings and, more specifically, in virtual space.

“…Evidence suggests that the colour of a room can augment some personality traits, elicit feelings of anger or comfort, and stimulate physiological responses (Dijkstra, Pieterse, & Pruyn, 2008;Korzh & Safuanova, 1993;Liu, 2014;Venolia, 1988). Pressly and Heesacker (2001) suggest that "warm hues and high intensities provide visual activation and stimulation, [whereas] cool hues and low intensities communicate subtlety and relaxation" (p. 150). According to Liu et al (2014), blue and green are the preferred colours and rooms of these colours tend to decrease the blood pressure, pulse and respiration of occupants.…”

Welcome to the first issue of Children Australia for 2017. This year we hope to continue to bring you a range of content to do with children and young people's health, care and wellbeing. This issue covers a variety of topics, and the next will be a themed issue based on presentations given at the 2016 Australian Childhood Foundation conference on trauma. As always, we welcome and encourage submissions from both new and seasoned researchers, as well as those of you working in the field who may like to share your thoughts and innovations in a practice commentary. While on the topic of working in the field, I thought I would take a moment to consider the ways that space or the built environment can impact upon children when engaging with services.

Background Elements of the built environment can impact on an occupant's frame of mind, their interaction with other occupants and their physiological state. It is anticipated that counselling spaces will have some influence on clients’ thoughts, feelings and behaviours and potentially affect the therapeutic process. Aim To examine clients’ experiences and perspectives of counselling room design, with the aim of identifying what they considered to be an “ideal” counselling room. Method A descriptive qualitative design was employed to examine 15 clients’ perspectives of counselling spaces. Semi‐structured interviews and a previously unused method of model design, in which participants created and recreated models of counselling rooms, were used to encourage participants to express their views of these spaces. Findings Thematic analysis revealed an interaction between physical–spatial features and clients’ thoughts and feelings. The driving force behind clients’ design preferences was the desire for a sense of physical and emotional comfort, which was achieved by creating a welcoming, relaxed and homely environment that promoted a sense of safety and security. Moreover, an association between clients’ opinions of the counsellor and the space in which they were counselled was revealed. Implications The design and layout of counselling rooms affect clients, particularly women who are feeling vulnerable. While we cannot create a space that fulfils every client's needs, we believe that clients should be included in the decision‐making process to promote their sense of safety and comfort because this impacts on the therapeutic practice.
