The phytochemical and pharmacological actions of Entada africana Guill. & Perr.

Abstract: Entada africana (Ea, Asteraceae) has been widely used traditionally to treat different ailments, as food, insecticides, source of gums, in some small carpentry works. Studies on the pharmacognostic characterization, nutritional, elemental and physicochemical contents has been reported. In vivo and in vitro studies on the plant validated some ethnomedicinal claims of the use of the plant as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-angiogenic, cytotoxic agents among others. “…The mixture was filtered, and the residue was extracted with petroleum ether (60-80°C) and concentrated to dryness. Total terpene content was expressed in terms of mg/g [26]. Alkaloids were determined using the procedure of Henry (1973) as described by Uddin et al [27].…”

“…Whereas in allied species of E. africana is also noted the same compound but due to geographical isolation and topotype of the species may varied the percentage of proportions of active constituents (Dong et al, 2012;Singh et al, 2011). Various parts of the E. africana was reported different chemicals such as polysaccharides (Diallo et al, 2001), betulin (Kwaji et al, 2018), saponins (Yusuf et al, 2019) and glycosides (Kwajiet al, 2017). However, in E. pursaetha needs further study for extraction, isolation and characterization of tagged phytomolecules with specific geographical chemotype.…”

“…Currently, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) has become firmly established as a key technological platform for secondary metabolite profiling in both plant and non-plant species (Robertson, 2005). More recently, detailed studies on phytochemical constituents and their pharmacological properties of E. africana have been elucidated by Yusuf and Abdullahi (2019). Entada phaseoloides is an important medicinal species in China and Taiwan, which has been detected the two new derivatives of Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and phenolic acid glucosides (Singh et al, 2011).…”

“…E. africana is widely used to treat various ailments, among which liver related diseases [ 3 , 38 ]. Investigations from our research group have led to the isolation of an active fraction, namely EaF10 (fraction methylene chloride/methanol 90:10, v/v) with promising activity against toxic hepatitis [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…In Central and West Africa, Entada africana (Fabaceae), is used in non-conventional medicine to treat many diseases, such as malaria, syphilis, wound healing, skin infections and liver disorders [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Modern pharmacological approaches on E. africana reported several biological activities: antimicrobial, antiplasmodial, antiproliferative and antioxidant activities [ 2 , 4 , 5 ].…”
