The Place of RNA in the Origin and Early Evolution of the Genetic Machinery

Abstract: The extant genetic machinery revolves around three interrelated polymers: RNA, DNA and proteins. Two evolutionary views approach this vital connection from opposite perspectives. The RNA World theory posits that life began in a cold prebiotic broth of monomers with the de novo emergence of replicating RNA as functionally self-contained polymer and that subsequent evolution is characterized by RNA → DNA memory takeover and ribozyme → enzyme catalyst takeover. The FeS World theory posits that life began as an au… Show more

“…Acetylene has also been detected in extant fumarolic gases16, in volcanic glasses17, and as products of volcanic simulation experiments18. Acetylene has been suggested as product of hydrolysis of calcium carbide (CaC 2 ) in the context of the Archaean eon15 and in the context of the Hadean eon1920. CaC 2 may be formed by the following transformations in the hot Hadean mantle21:…”

“…The RNA world hypothesis has helped sharpen our focus on what could have taken place 4 Gya, in that RNA serves as a powerful model for a self-sustaining chemical system capable of evolutionary change (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Although this hypothesis has engendered much debate, both in its general applicability and in the details of its implementation (7)(8)(9), there are some clear emerging trends. Among the recent advances in prebiotic RNA studies is the concept of an evolving "network" of RNAs being required to kick-start life, rather than a single selfish entity.…”
