Although the EU regulations on novel foods came into force in the 1990s, the threat of a famine and food crisis in Europe has appeared to such an extent only in recent years. The concept of novel foods, which can address challenges, is nevertheless associated with several ethical issues. In the individual aspect, it is the possibility of using widely innovative methods to produce food that successfully replaces meat or provides an alternative to sugar. On a broader scale, it is a replacement of products that are too expensive for the environment (i.e., greenhouse effect, deforestation) to provide an additional, entirely separate source of nutrition. This paper seeks to answer the research question regarding the role of law in the process of developing the concept of novel foods, with particular reference to whether and how the law addresses the ethical challenges that are posed by the novel foods. In addition to the main conclusions (multi-faceted dimension of novel foods, ethical and moral barriers to overcome), future prospects are also presented.

Przeprowadzone rozważania są próbą porównania i oceny sposobów przeciwdziałania marnowaniu żywności w Polsce oraz w Niemczech. Zasięg tego zjawiska jest globalny, ale przeciwdziałać mu należy już na poziomie regionalnym, a nawet lokalnym. W Polsce została wprowadzona odrębna regulacja prawna w zakresie przeciwdziałania marnowaniu żywności, natomiast w Niemczech taka regulacja nie występuje. W konkluzji autor stwierdza między innymi, że zarówno w UE, jak i w Polsce i w Niemczech brakuje rozwiązań prawnych, które umożliwiłyby skuteczne i kompleksowe przeciwdziałanie marnowaniu żywności. Zauważa jednak, że bez udziału i zaangażowania społeczeństwa regulacje prawne nie wystarczą do skutecznego przeciwdziałania marnowaniu żywności także dlatego, że największy udział w nim ma etap konsumpcji żywności, co do którego możliwość ingerencji prawodawcy jest bardzo ograniczona. W tym zakresie warto opierać się na doświadczeniach niemieckich i inicjatywach tam podejmowanych.

Cellular agriculture addresses the environmental burdens associated with conventional animal agriculture by cultivating animal products such as meat, dairy, and eggs from cell cultures rather than traditional livestock farming. The chapter explores cellular agriculture's technological advancements, economic implications, and regulatory challenges, emphasizing its role in decreasing deforestation, methane emissions, and water usage. Furthermore, it highlights the potential for cellular agriculture to reduce the reliance on antibiotics, thereby contributing to public health. Through a comprehensive analysis of current research, case studies, and future projections, this chapter underscores the critical importance of cellular agriculture in the global effort to combat climate change and foster a sustainable food system.
