The plant geography of the central Aegean

Abstract: Together with a number of collaborators I have made a detailed investigation of the differentiation of the flora and the distribution areas in one of the Aegean regions, the Cyclades. In this paper a few points of general interest concerning the phytogeography of this region are discussed, e.g. the „natural”︁ vegetation, the distribution of rock plants, the explanation of the „Cycladian gap”︁ in the distribution of some species.

“…When we analysed the five modules separately, all of them displayed high rates of species spatial turnover and richness difference ( Table 2). Runemark (1971) first noticed that there might be some degree of compartmentalization in Kik; based on Lund's Botanical Museum extensive collections, he grouped together the following islands: Andros-Tinos-Mykonos, Kea-Kythnos-Serifos, Paros-Naxos and Sikinos-Folegandros. Netcarto recognized five modules that partly concur with Runemark's tentative classification.…”

“…Netcarto recognized five modules that partly concur with Runemark's tentative classification. However, Runemark (1971) stated that Serifos and Sifnos, as well as Syros and Tinos show great floristic dissimilarities with each other. In our analysis, these islands were grouped together in the same modules (in NWC and NC, respectively).…”

“…They are finite and independent, easily delimited, naturally and not politically circumscribed, and their endemism has been much studied (Runemark, 1971;Valentine, 1972;Carlquist, 1974;Bramwell, 1979;Kunkel, 1980) and theorized upon (MacArthur and Wilson 1967). “…The ecological setting of endemics needs definition, but there is little systematic ecology at all, much less adequate attention to endemic plants. Runemark (1969Runemark ( , 1971 invokes extinction by reproductive drift to explain otherwise inexplicable extinctions and vagaries of species' distributions on these islands. Has any extinction occurred?…”
