There is a long history of study to understand why work groups do or do not adopt new collaboration technologies. However, research has focused on only one technology. The underlying assumption is that work groups can adopt or not adopt that one technology based on that technology alone. In making this assumption, many researchers have failed to realize the importance of alternative technologies in the adoption process or the fact that groups can adopt more than one technology. To address this issue, we examined an attempt by a scientific research organization to have its work groups adopt a particular group-collaboration technology. Although the target technology was more than appropriate for the task and the organization provided all the resources needed for work groups to adopt the technology, it largely failed. This was in large part because of two alternative collaboration technologies that acted as substitutes.

In the contemporary information-saturated world, there is a need for an easier, faster, and more social way to keep office workers updated and better aware of surrounding activities. Today's information management systems tend to consume time rather than simplify information sharing.The Vista system tries to solve this problem. It is designed to be used in places of social interaction, where it displays information about professional activities happening in the department. In this paper, the origins of the project, the user-centered design process, and iterative evaluation of the concept are described. The paper concludes with observations regarding the social acceptance of Vista and reflections on future research aspects.Vista is the result of a design project conducted in cooperation between the User-System Interaction postgraduate program at Eindhoven University of Technology, and the Research Group of Océ Technologies in the Netherlands.

Public displays have advanced from isolated and non interactive "ad" displays which show images and videos to displays that are networked, interactive, and open to a wide variety of content and applications. Prior work has shown large potential of user-generated content on public displays. However, one of the problems with user-generated content on public displays is moderation as content may be explicit or troublesome for a particular location. In this work we explore the expectations of users with regard to content moderation on public displays. An online survey revealed that people not only think that display content should be moderated but also that a delay of up to 10 minutes is acceptable if display content is moderated. In a subsequent in the wild deployment we compared different moderation delays. We found that a moderation delay significantly decreases the number of usergenerated posts while at the same time there is no significant effect on users' decision to repeatedly post on the display.
