The polar cap magnetic activity indices in the southern (PCS) and northern (PCN) polar caps: Consistency and discrepancy

Abstract: There are some systematic differences between the 1‐min Polar Cap (PC) indices of magnetic activity derived from data from the southern hemispheric station, Vostok, and the northern hemispheric station, Thule. First of all, differences in sign of the PC index are observed when BZ is northward: negative values of the PC index are common in the summer polar cap. Secondly, predominance of larger PC index values is seen in winter hemisphere for extremely high levels of magnetic activity (PC > 12) when the ionosphe… Show more

“…Since 1992, the time resolution of the PC index has been modified from 15 min to 1 min. Accordingly, the 1‐min PCS and PCN indices now show significant differences [ Lukianova et al , 2002]. Lukianova et al [2002] suggests that the different ways of determining the base lines and coefficients determinations cause the discrepancy.…”

“…Accordingly, the 1‐min PCS and PCN indices now show significant differences [ Lukianova et al , 2002]. Lukianova et al [2002] suggests that the different ways of determining the base lines and coefficients determinations cause the discrepancy. Moreover, the 1‐min PCS index has been shown to be sensitive to other solar wind parameters such as dynamic pressure [ Lukianova et al , 2002].…”

“…However, differences may arrive as the result both of different conditions in the two polar caps (e.g., different solar illumination) and of different response to forcing from the solar wind as well as different response to substorms. Such differences have the potential for interesting studies (e.g., Lukianova et al, 2002).…”
