The poplar K+ channel KPT1 is associated with K+ uptake during stomatal opening and bud development

Abstract: SummaryTo gain insights into the performance of poplar guard cells, we have measured stomatal conductance and aperture, guard cell K content and K -channel activity of the guard cell plasma membrane in intact poplar leaves. In contrast to Arabidopsis, broad bean and tobacco grown under same conditions, poplar stomata operated just in the dynamic range ± any change in conductance altered the rate of photosynthesis. In response to light, CO 2 and abscisic acid (ABA), the stomatal opening velocity was two to ®ve … Show more

“…De acordo com Prado (2008), mais de 60 enzimas dependem do K para sua atividade normal. Esse elemento também exerce papel-chave na regulação osmótica e promove a manutenção do turgor nas células-guardas, por meio da elevação do seu potencial osmótico, o que resulta em absorção de água por essas células e por adjacentes, e, consequentemente, gera maior turgor e abertura dos estômatos (Langer et al, 2004).…”

“…The total RNA of guard cells was sampled and extracted according to Langer et al (2004). For leaves, buds and flowers, the EZNA Plant RNA Mini Kit (Omega Bio-Tek, Norcross, GA, USA) was used, while RNA from extrafloral nectaries was isolated with the RNeasy MicroKit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany).…”

“…Potassium (K) fertilization can be considered as an alternative, which can minimize the deleterious effects caused by the high concentrations of salts in the water, because this macronutrient plays a key role in the osmotic regulation and promotes turgor maintenance in guard cells, which results in absorption of water by these cells and by adjacent cells and, consequently, generates more turgor and stomatal opening (Langer et al, 2004). Furthermore, it acts as osmoregulator, playing an essential role in water saving, cell turgor, carbohydrate transport and respiration (Shimazaki et al, 2007).…”
