The position of a standard optical computer mouse affects cardiorespiratory responses during the operation of a computer under time constraints

Abstract: Objectives: This study investigated the association between task-induced stress and fatigue by examining the cardiovascular responses of subjects using different mouse positions while operating a computer under time constraints. Material and Methods: The study was participated by 16 young, healthy men and examined the use of optical mouse devices affixed to laptop computers. Two mouse positions were investigated: (1) the distal position (DP), in which the subjects place their forearms on the desk accompanied b… Show more

“…Porges described stress as an autonomic state that reflects a disruption of homeostasis due to depressed parasympathetic tone [1]. Workload-related stress often produces changes in behavioral (e.g., higher error rates) [2,3] and physiological (e.g., faster heartbeat) functions [4,5]. Thus, the degree of stress can be mirrored from behavior performance and can be quantified on a physiological level.…”

“…Over years, some research scholars have tried to build some optical computer systems [ 1 , 2 , 22 – 26 ]. In Japan, the research of optical array logic appeared [ 27 , 28 ], Optical computer mouse was developed [ 29 ]. In the United States, the study of dual-mode optical computers appeared [ 30 ].…”

“…For the pain site assessment, the sites were explained using a body chart, and participants described them freely. Fatigue was assessed using the VAS to evaluate the severity (fatigue VAS) [31,32]. A sample pie-chart time schedule for one day was presented to the participants, and they were asked to freely describe items pertaining to their daytime activities.…”
