The POSNA Pediatric Musculoskeletal Functional Health Questionnaire: Report on Reliability, Validity, and Sensitivity to Change

Abstract: The goal of orthopaedic interventions is to improve the functional health of patients, particularly physical function. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) commissioned a work group to construct functional health outcomes scales for children and adolescents, focusing on musculoskeletal health. The work group developed scales assessing upper extremity function, transfers and mobility, physical function and sports, comfort (pain free), happin… Show more

“…Tools to evaluate other domains of the ICF are readily available and used in some clinics, but these were not ranked high enough in the current rounds by the iPluto participants. Available tools for evaluation of the domain “Activities and participation” are for instance the AHA/mini‐AHA,17 BPOM,16 Children's Hand‐use Experience Questionnaire (CHEQ),30 Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) Outcome Measure,31, 32 Hand Use at Home (HUH)33 and Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) 26, 34. For “Environmental Factors” the PedsQL Family impact module35 and PODCI34 are available.…”

“…We elected to use the Kidscreen short index measure as a comparator as a well developed generic instrument that would not overburden the respondents with additional questions. While other generic instruments that focus on physical functioning may show greater sensitivity to change than the Kidscreen in children with foot or ankle problems, some outcome measures commonly used in orthopaedics, such as the Activities Scale for Kids [15] or the Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument [16], include a number of items that may not have face validity for children with foot or ankle problems.…”
