The possible significance of the baropathic nature of keratectasias

Abstract: Background:  The aim was to describe the baropathic nature of the keratectasias and to examine the possible significance of intraocular pressure‐elevating activities in the development and/or progression of these conditions. Methods:  Articles were selected from 150 produced from a PubMed search for keratectasias and used to elucidate the biomechanics and dependence on intraocular pressure of those conditions. Results:  The combination of viscoelastic and baropathic features of keratectasia indicate that eleva… Show more

“…Light fingertip touch on adnexal skin that transmitted a corresponding light compressive force to the eye was found to approximately double IOP. 34 Hence, lid massage associated with WC could be contraindicated for any 36 and axial myopia (unpublished data). Alternatives to WC for heating the glands in the treatment of MGD and which do not prescribe additional manual pressure over the eyelids during treatment are currently available.…”

“…23,24,26 Thinning and loss of rigidity may predispose a biomechanically weakened corneal region to cone formation in response to intraocular pressure-distending forces, as in the case of eye rubbing. 24,27 Future research would be welcome to provide further understanding of how ocular rubbing could contribute to manifestation of corneal ectasia.…”
