“…The degree of network formation depends upon the pH and ionic strength of the medium and also the type of counter ion and functional charge-density of the polymer. 46 Iwakura et al 83,84 have prepared PAAK-KOH-H 2 O hydrogel electrolyte and subsequently employed them in Ni/MH batteries. Iwakura et al, 85 Nohara et al, 86 and Wada et al 87,88 have reported ECs employing alkaline cross-linked potassium poly(acrylate) hydrogel, namely PAAK-KOH-H 2 O, as electrolyte and compared the performance with an EC employing 10 M KOH aqueous electrolyte; the performances of the ECs are found to be similar.…”

“…Reportedly, organic PGEs have been used in both lithium batteries 5 and electrochemical double-layer capacitors ͑EDLC͒. 33,34 have found applications in nickel-metal hydride batteries and EDLCs. However, an aqueous PGE suitable to acidic, alkaline and neutral environments is lacking in the literature.…”

“…Iwakura et al firstly prepared a polymer hydrogel electrolyte (PHE) in which a KOH aqueous solution was held in a network structure of the cross-linked potassium poly(acrylate) (PAAK). They found that the PHE had liquidlike ionic conductivity, and applied it to all solid state Ni-MH batteries [8][9][10]. Inoue et al developed a clay-based inorganic hydrogel electrolyte using hydrotalcite (HT) and KOH aqueous solution, and clarified that it had ionic conductivity comparable to the PHE [11].…”
