In this study, wood sawdust as waste residue from wood processing mills was pretreated using torrefaction to improve fuel properties and densified to facilitate transportation. Sawdust was torrefied in a fixed bed reactor using inside temperatures (IT) of 230, 260 and 290 °C for 15, 30 and 45 min, residence time. Due to the low calorific value of the treatments, the outside temperature (OT) of the fixed bed reactor was used instead for a fixed duration of 45 min, which resulted in an increase in energy value by 40% for the most severe conditions. The mechanical strength of the pellets was enhanced by adding 20% binder (steam-treated spruce sawdust) to biochar, which improved the pellet tensile strength by 50%. Liquid by-products from the torrefaction process contained furfural and acetic acid, which can be separated for commercial uses. Thermochemical analysis showed better fuel properties of OT torrefied samples such as high fixed carbon (52%), low volatiles (41%) and lower oxygen contents (27%) compared to IT torrefied samples (18, 77 and 43%, respectively). Low moisture uptake of torrefied pellets compared to raw pellets, along with other attributes such as renewability, make them competent substitutes to fossil-based energy carriers such as coal.

Laser‐induced damage on metal parts by stray light is a common issue for high‐energy laser systems, especially inertial‐confinement fusion (ICF) systems. Micro‐dust could be produced from the surface irradiated and adhere to and cause further damage of other optical parts like potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal. We propose a functional gradient film based on aluminum anodization to raise the laser‐induced damage threshold (LIDT). The number of particles produced by a 355‐nm nanosecond laser was considered a factor of LIDT. To investigate the interaction theoretically, a coupled model of electromagnetic radiation and heat conversion based on Ohm's law for a nanosecond laser pulse absorbed by the films was used to calculate the LIDT temperature. Films with different roughnesses and an untreated aluminum alloy (AA) were irradiated. The LIDT was 0.5 J/cm2, with a temperature of 5790 K, which largely prevented the laser damage of the AA and reduced particles produced while metal damaged. The combination of simulations and experiments provided a new and simple indication of LIDT for aluminum‐based functional gradient films. It also provided a guide for clean manufacturing with less particle generation, which is vital to the success of ICF systems that will generate sustainable energy.

Spatial Correlation of Air Pollution and Its Causes in Northeast China

To understand the status of air pollution in northeastern China, we explore the structure of air pollution transmission networks and propose targeted policy recommendations. Using air pollution data from 35 cities in northeastern China for a total of 879 periods from 6 January 2015 to 3 June 2017, this paper used social network analysis (SNA) to construct a spatial association network of air pollution in the region, and analyzed the spatial association of air pollution among cities and its causes in an attempt to reveal the transmission path of air pollution in the region. The results show that inter-city air pollution in northeast China forms a complex and stable correlation network with obvious seasonal differences of “high in winter and low in summer”. Different cities in the region play the roles of “spillover”, “intermediary” and “receiver” of air pollution in the network. Small respirable particulate (PM2.5) pollution constitutes a significant component of air pollution in northeast China, which spreads from Liaoning province to Heilongjiang province via Jilin province. Therefore, regional joint pollution prevention and control measures should be adopted to combat the air pollution problem, and different treatment measures should be developed for different city “roles” in the pollution network, in order to fundamentally solve the air pollution problem in the region.
