The Potential of Metadata for Linked Open Data and its Value for Users and Publishers

Abstract: Public and private organizations increasingly release their data to gain benefits such as transparency and economic growth. The use of these open data can be supported and stimulated by providing considerable metadata (data about the data), including discovery, contextual and detailed metadata. In this paper we argue that metadata are key enablers for the effective use of Linked Open Data (LOD). We illustrate the potential of metadata by 1) presenting an overview of advantages and disadvantages of meta… Show more

“…In this sense, the public authorities must convey social messages via different channels to encourage the usage of open datasets and impress upon them the need to create social and economic value of them. Second, OGD initiatives propel innovation and economic growth (Shepherd, 2015;Zuiderwijk, Jeffery and Janssen, 2012;Yang and Wu, 2016). Therefore, on the one hand, businesses and small-and-medium enterprises may tap these datasets for identifying and producing new products and services, others may use OGD for furthering their research or academic activities.…”

“…data about the data (Jeffery, 2000)) to a dataset, because he or she knows these metadata by heart. If the data were published and someone wants to reuse them, this potential data user may not have any knowledge about these metadata and may not be able to interpret and use the data in an adequate manner because of this lack of metadata (Zuiderwijk et al, 2012c). If the researcher still wanted the dataset to be reusable after the research, additional effort was required to prepare and process the datasets to enable publication and data reuse.…”

“…Representing information with RDF and following the LOD principle make research information freely available to everyone. A large amount of research information is suitable for linking to the LOD Cloud [2], an excellent way to expose, share, and connect research data (Cregan, 2009), and combining the metadata principle with LOD has numerous advantages (Zuiderwijk et al, 2012). This paper proposes an approach to the development of an application profile that covers both the four types of research information previously mentioned and the entire research development lifecycle.…”
