The Potential Role of Minoxidil in the Hair Transplantation Setting

Abstract: Based on the surgeons' clinical experience, the use of approved hair regrowth agents in hair transplant patients with viable but suboptimally functioning follicles in the region to be transplanted can increase hair density, speed regrowth in transplanted follicles, and complement the surgical result by slowing down or stopping further hair loss.

“…Complications include temporary loss of hair adjacent to the donor and recipient area due to decreased blood supply at the incision site, infection, pain, and failure of the transplanted hair to grow. The use of topical minoxidil may increase hair density and speed the regrowth of transplanted follicles following the surgical procedure 127. Referral to a dedicated and reputable hair transplantation specialist should be offered to those patients who desire this therapy.…”

“…Both minoxidil and finasteride have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in AGA. 5,12 Although the mechanism of action of minoxidil is not completely understood, it has been shown 5 to slow the rate of hair loss and, to a much lesser extent, increase hair growth and survival. The use of finasteride, a 5-a reductase inhibitor, is based on the association between AGA and androgen exposure.…”

“…This clearly indicated that no new hair follicles formed in the treated areas. As an OTC drug for hair re-growth, minoxidil is known to dilate blood vessels surrounding hair bulbs and enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the cells of hair follicles [ 37 ]. However, the exact mechanism of the stimulation of hair growth is not known.…”
