The Potential Role of Sphingomonas Paucimobilis in Bioremediation of Soils Contaminated With Hydrocarbon and Heavy Metal

Abstract: Aiming to find the solution to the problem of soil polluted by hydrocarbons and the associated heavy metals, the present study focused on the biodegradation and bioremediation capability of Sphingomonas paucimobilis. Morphological and biochemical tests have been used to identify bacterial isolates and to confirm that an automated instrument for bacterial identification (Vitek II) has been used. Based on the results, the bacteria were identified as Sphingomonas paucimobilis. The bioremediation capacity was moni… Show more

“…to Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria phyla, are among the most widely spread and frequently listed bacterial genera in TE-contaminated soils, and at the same time display a high TE tolerance (Pires et al, 2017;Chellaiah, 2018;Chen et al, 2018;Cui et al, 2018). Nonetheless, Sphingomonas, member of the Proteobacteria (Xie et al, 2010;Chen et al, 2014;Jaafar, 2019), as well as Pseudarthrobacter (Chen et al, 2014;Fekih et al, 2018;Park et al, 2019), Nocardioides (Bagade et al, 2016;Cui et al, 2018), and Streptomyces (Álvarez et al, 2013;Cui et al, 2018;Durand et al, 2018;Lasudee et al, 2018;Timková et al, 2018;Álvarez-López et al, 2020), belonging to the Actinobacteria, were also highlighted for displaying TE-tolerance and even studied for potential remediation applications. Indeed, these bacterial genera are known to accumulate Cd, Ni, Cr or Pb from TE-contaminated soils and to induce changes in the oxidation state of the TE (Pires et al, 2017;Chellaiah, 2018;Timková et al, 2018).…”

“…Sphingomonas paucimobilis is one of the bacteria isolated from cosmetics in my research work. It is a gram-negative, aerobic, and opportunistic pathogen and causes infections in immunocompromised individuals [14]. It causes soft tissue infection characterized by fluid and puss exudates from deep tissues.…”

“…Further work and research are needed to explore and uncover the capacity of this bacteria to perform bioremediation and make our environment free of harmful substances. Recombinant DNA technology can be used to identify the genes responsible for bioremediation and recombinant strains can be developed to remediate the environment [14].…”

“…On the other hand, it was reported by [ 31 ] that Achromobacter denitrificans species showed an impressive ability to resist cadmium up to 100 mg/l. Additionally, Sphingomonas paucimobilis have a remarkable attribute to remediated Pb and Cd with high MIC value of 2000 ppm and 500 ppm for both Pb and Cd, respectively [ 32 ]. According to our results, about 40.9% (9 Strains) of the rhizo-isolates were gram positive in which Bacillus species were the omnipresent strains.…”
