The power of internet exposure: influence of online news coverage on restaurant survival

Abstract: Purpose Few studies on hospitality firm survival consider the impact of online media exposure. This paper aims to investigate how the online news coverage of restaurants, characterized in terms of the number of articles, channel (Web page or mobile app), topic (operations or products) and consistency (mix of news tones), influences their survival. Design/methodology/approach A yearly panel data set covering 682 news-reported restaurants in Shanghai, China, over the period 2011–2019 is analyzed using a Cox mo… Show more

“…Negative information mixed with positive information can have a positive impact on customers’ purchase behavior in some contexts (Sidnam-Mauch and Bighash, 2021). This result expands the knowledge of the relationship between news inconsistency and firm survival from linear (Li et al , 2022) to non-linear. With the inconsistency calculation method proposed in this study to quantify the degree of inconsistency, we can go deeply to investigate how different degrees of media coverage inconsistency affect the long-term survival of hotels.…”

“…inconsistent product reviews (Byun et al , 2021). Among them, Li et al (2022) introduced the concept of inconsistency into the online news coverage context and regarded it as a dummy variable to indicate whether online news articles of one firm are inconsistent in tone. However, this study failed to quantify the degree of inconsistency and explore the different impacts of different degrees of media coverage inconsistency on firm survival.…”

“…Therefore, it is expected that people will ignore the negative aspects of the presented information and will be attracted only by the interesting properties of the variance itself. We argue that when the volume of online reviews is large, the facilitative effect of online reviews on consumers' purchase decisions will significantly outweigh the negative effects of online review variance (Li H. et al, 2022). Thus, the interaction between online review volume and variance of a new product has a facilitative effect on consumer purchase decisions.…”
