The power of one reinforcer: The effect of a single reinforcer in the context of shaping

Abstract: During shaping, if the organism is engaged in behaviors other than the current approximation, the amount of time between reinforcers increases. In these situations, the shaper may resort to what is referred to as a “desperation‐driven click.” That is, after a period of no reinforcement, the shaper delivers one reinforcer for a nontarget approximation. Reports from professional animal trainers suggest that the animal may continue performing this new behavior, even if it is reinforced only once. This study attem… Show more

“…Catania (1998) and Zeiler (1978) describe a variety of issues with shaping, and Staddon (2016, pp. 523‐525) succinctly summarized the situation as conceptually complex and ambiguous, noting that “Shaping takes a certain amount of intuition…” (p. 524), and more empirical explorations of the processes of shaping like those of Hunter and Rosales‐Ruiz (2019) and Athens et al (2007) are badly needed. Similarly, more work like that of Fountain et al (2012) is needed to clarify the various processes underlying shaping of serial performances.…”

“…Placing a food pellet in one hole out of a large matrix of holes, Iversen and Mogensen () verified this pattern occurs in rats. Mal et al () found it in horses, and Hunter and Rosales‐Ruiz () found it in humans (with a clicker instead of food). Thus the burst of lever pressing might have been an artifact of the rat's focal search in and around the food hopper.…”

“…Of course we know that single reinforcers have effects. We see them in Skinner's earliest experiments (Skinner, 1930, 1938) as well as in more recent research (Hunter & Rosales‐Ruiz, 2019; Iversen & Mogensen, 1988). We must take care, however, to distinguish between the stimulus effects of delivering reinforcers and the operant effects of the contingent relations between responses and reinforcers.…”
