The Practice: An Analysis of the Factors Influencing the Training of Health Care Participants through Innovative Technology

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework for understanding how new technologies become a part of culture and change our traditional images of health care and providers. Using the diffusion of innovations theory provides an understanding of how providers can adopt technology into practice. More specifically, this paper focuses on the adoption and diffusion of telemedicine. In order for physicians to develop competence in communicating with technology such as telemedicine, a closer evaluation … Show more

“…There is a developing body of research documenting the effectiveness and level of provider/patient comfort with telehealth interventions (Denizard-Thompson et al, 2011; Gattoni & Tenzek, 2010; Hailey, Roine, & Ohinmaa, 2008; McGowan, 2008; Ruskin et al, 2004). As part of an effort to meet the mental health needs of rural and indigenous people in Alaska, the University of Alaska developed the joint PhD program as a means to train students as telepsychology services providers.…”

“…There is a need for programs to train students to think critically about the use and impact of distance technologies in practice. This includes consideration of issues that have arisen in the evolution and adoption of teleheath services (DeLeon, Crimmins, & Wolf, 2003; Denizard-Thompson, Feiereisel, Stevens, Miller, & Wofford, 2011; Gattoni & Tenzek, 2010; McGowan, 2008; Rees & Haythornthwaite, 2004). Integration of distance technologies in professional psychology training programs can facilitate the development of skills necessary to use the technology effectively in actual practice.…”

“…Diffusion of Innovations (DoI) 24 was used as a framework, since the theory helps to understand factors that facilitate the adoption of new technology in health care 25 , including wearable devices 26,27 . Perceptions of the attributes of an innovation are a main indicator whether the innovation will be accepted.…”

“…Research on mHealth and apps has included various theoretical frames (e.g., Gattoni & Tenzek, 2010;Lin & Bautista, 2017), including the Diffusion of Innovations (DOI; Rogers, 2003) framework. Yet, limited research has applied DOI when looking at the use of electronic health records (EHR; Barrett & Stephens, 2017).…”
