The predatory strategy, natural diet, and life cycle ofCyrba algerina,an araneophagic jumping spider (Salticidae: Spartaeinae) from Azerbaijan

Abstract: The life cycle and natural diet of Cyrba algerina (Lucas) in the Apsheron Peninsula (Azerbaijan) was determined by sampling at frequent intervals throughout the year. Early-instar juveniles emerged in late July, grew to about half of adult size by winter, over-wintered and then, in the spring of the following year, grew to adult size and reached maturity. The primary mating season was in May, after which the number of adults in the population declined sharply. Ten arthropod orders were represented in the prey … Show more

“…For away-from-nest encounters, one oecobiid was put in a transparent plastic Petri dish (diameter 85 mm, height 12.5 mm) and then, 30 min later, a test spider (C. algerina) was introduced. This corresponded to the way encounters with oecobiids outside nests were staged in the earlier study of the Baku C. algerina (Guseinov et al 2004). However, for staging encounters at nests, we particularly wanted to observe C. algerina's initial reaction upon detecting an oecobiid inside a nest.…”

“…The rationale for considering oecobiids in particular is an earlier study in which it was shown that C. algerina from a population in Baku (Azerbaijan) uses specialised preycapture behaviour during encounters with Oecobius maculatus, this being an especially common prey species in Baku (Guseinov et al 2004). Preliminary field work in Portugal revealed a striking difference between two sites.…”

“…Like P. africana juveniles, C. algerina settles beside nests occupied by oecobiids, intermittently probing or striking the nest and capturing the oecobiid either as it leaves the nest or later when it returns to the nest (Cerveira and Jackson 2011;Guseinov et al 2004). However, P. africana juveniles differ from C. algerina by practising communal predation, suggesting that communal predation may favour ability to base foraging decisions on particularly fine detail.…”

“…The present paper, deals with Menemerus taeniatus (L. Koch, 1867), and is part of a project on the prey of Palaearctic jumping spiders (Guseinov, 2004(Guseinov, , 2005Guseinov et al, 2004). M. taeniatus is a relatively large salticid (adult body length 8-10 mm), with adult males usually slightly smaller than adult females.…”
