The Predictive Significance of the Advanced Lung Cancer Inflammation Index (ALI) in Patients with Melanoma Treated with Immunotherapy as Second-Line Therapy

Abstract: The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) is a useful tool to predict the clinical outcome in several malignancies. The ALI not only contains indices related to inflammation but also the body mass index (BMI), which was reported to correlate with the sarcopenic status. However, to date, its predictive significance in metastatic melanoma patients treated with second-line immunotherapy has not been evaluated. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from patients who were diagnosed with metastatic melan… Show more

“…ALI was originally used to assess the prognosis of lung cancer patients, such as non-small cell lung cancer 28 and small cell lung cancer. 29 Soon after, researchers found that ALI is also a good independent prognostic indicator in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, 30 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, 31 32 esophageal cancer, 32 gastric cancer, 21,33 colorectal cancer, 34,35 melanoma, 36 and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. 37 ALI is an index related to inflammation and nutritional status.…”

“…Increasing evidence has shown that SIR was closely related to the nutritional status of various types of cancer (26). The ALI is a new malignant tumor index recently described, and the potential of the ALI as a prognostic factor for various types of cancer has gradually been revealed, such as for lung cancer (27,28), gastric cancer (18,29), colorectal cancer (25,30), pancreatic cancer (31,32), esophageal cancer (33), head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (34), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (35), thymic epithelial tumors (36), and melanoma (37). We hypothesize that the systemic inflammation reflected by the ALI is the basis of sarcopenia.…”

“…Many researchers have also reported that the ALI is significantly correlated with poor prognosis in various malignancies, including esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, squamous head and neck cancer, pancreatic carcinoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. 12 , 15 , 41 44 Cheng et al. conducted a study on melanoma and found that ALI was a strong prognostic factor for disease control.…”
