The Premasseteric Branch of the Facial Artery: A Review and Translation of Adachi’s Work

Abstract: The premasseteric branch of the facial artery is a variable posterior branch that is closely associated with the anterior border of the masseter muscle. Since its first description, the premasseteric branch has been described using different terms such as the masseteric or posterior branch of the facial artery. While the artery's anatomy is known, it is infrequently discussed in the literature. This manuscript reviews the artery's origin, course, and importance during maxillofacial procedures, especially those… Show more

“…The FA is known to have facial branches, which run medially; previous studies have therefore mostly focused on the branching patterns of these medial FA branches (Pilsl et al, 2016). The lateral FA branches have been examined in a few studies, and were generally considered as a variation of the FA (Bordes et al, 2020; Padur & Kumar, 2019).…”

“…The premasseteric branch is one of the named lateral FA branches, being called “ramus premassetericus” for the first time by Adachi (1928). Since its introduction, the premasseteric branch has been described using different terms such as the masseteric or posterior branch (Bordes et al, 2020). This arterial branch has generally been small, but sometimes it was found to be as large as the FA itself, and Magden et al (2009) suggested that the mean diameter of the premasseteric branch was 1.12 mm (range 0.6–2.1 mm) at its origin.…”

“…This so-called "premasseteric branch" is described to end or anastomose soon after its origin [29]. The premasseteric branch is also known as the posterior branch of the facial artery and is generally found to terminate in the region of the parotid duct [30].…”

“…In the nasolabial fold area, the facial artery, ascending along the wrinkle lines, necessitates attention. In the mid-cheek area, critical landmarks include the premasseteric branch of the facial artery, tracing the anterior border of the masseter muscle, and the transverse facial artery, ascending subcutaneously beneath the zygomatic arch from the superficial temporal artery [29][30][31][32][33]. Furthermore, in the lateral face region, diligence is required to prevent injury to the ascending superficial temporal artery along the preauricular crease (Figure 12).…”
