The preparation and crystal structures of two diphenylantimony triacetate hydrolysis products: [Ph2Sb(OAc)2]2O and [(Ph8Sb4O6)·(HOAc)3]·CH2Cl2

Abstract: Diphenylantimony triacetate undergoes ready hydrolysis to give the oxygen-bridged compound [Ph2Sb(OAc)2]20 containing seven-coordinate antimonyb) atoms, and [(Ph8Sb406)(HOAc)3] containing a non-adamantane Sb406 cage.

“…For both of the compounds route A utilizing silver acetate affords the best yields of the pure products. In this route the initially formed acetate Ph 2 Sb(O 2 CMe) 3 is very moisture-sensitive and presumably hydrolyzes to give [Ph 2 Sb(O 2 CMe) 2 ] 2 O as reported in the literature . Upon addition of the phosphinic acid, two of the acetates may be replaced to give a mixed acetate−phosphinate; in fact, in the case of dicyclohexylphosphinic acid, when the reaction time after adding the acid was reduced, we have been able to isolate the mixed acetate−phosphinate, [Ph 2 Sb(O 2 CMe)(O 2 P(C 6 H 11 ) 2 )] 2 O ( 4 ) ( 31 P NMR: 53.1 ppm).…”

“…If the reaction is allowed to continue for a longer time or if 4 is crystallized in open air, adventitious moisture is sufficient to hydrolyze this intermediate to 2 (eq 2). Such a feature is observed for other antimony carboxylates also. ,

“…The general formula is [(SbCl 3 ) 2 (µ-O)(µ-OR)-(µ-X)] with, for example, R = H, X = O 2 CMe, 5 O 2 CCl 3 , 6 HSO 4 7 or ClO 4 ; 8 R = Me, X = SO 4 Me, 9 SO 2 Me, 10 SO 3 Me 10 or O 2 PMe(OMe); 11 and R = Et, X = O 2 PEt(OEt) 11 or O 2 PMe-(OMe). 11 Bridging in the tetranuclear compound, [Sb 4 Ph 8 -O 6 (MeCO 2 H) 3 ], 12 is similar with pairs of antimony atoms spanned by hydroxo, oxo and acetate bridges. Pairs of antimony atoms can also be bridged by either three halogens or two halogens and one oxygen, as in [NMe 4 ] 3 [(SbCl 3 ) 2 (µ-Br) 3 ] 13 and [Hpy] 2 [(SbCl 2 ) 2 (µ-O)(µ-X) 2 ], where py = pyridine and X = Br or Cl, 14 respectively.…”
