The Preparation and Properties of Pure Divinyl Ether

Abstract: The first recorded reference to divinyl ether occurs in a paper by "On the Ethereal Oil of Allium Ursinum L." The divinyl sulfide, which was obtained from the essential oil of this plant, when treated with silver oxide yielded a low-boiling, sulfur-free liquid, the boiling point of which was about 39°. Two determinations of the molecular weight corresponded with the calculated value for divinyl ether. Semmler did not further characterize this liquid. An attempt to prepare divinyl ether by the exhaustive methyl… Show more

“…In one case, previously reported, in which a maximal subtotal thyroidectomy had been performed, both roentgen irradiation and a subsequent surgical attempt to remove the remaining fragments of the thyroid tissue were unsuccessful, and the clinical con¬ dition was not improved. 3. One patient whose condition remained the same in spite of massive irradiation showed conspicuous improvement coincident with the reduction in the basal metabolic rate when the entire thyroid gland was removed according to the technic previously described by Berlin.…”

“…The anaesthetic properties of divinyl ether were first demonstrated by Leake and Chen in 1930, and in the following year a pure product, prepared by Ruigh and Major (1931), was tested on dogs. The first trial upon human beings was carried out by Gelfan and Bell (1933), who used the anaesthetic on themselves; and in 1934 a large series of cases was reported by Goldschmidt et al It was not until 1935, when Sir Francis Shipway published his findings on a series of cases, that the use of vinesthene became general in this country.…”

“…THE prediction of Leake and Chen (10) that the unsaturated ethers might have valuable anesthetic properties led to the preparation of divinyl ether by Ruigh and Major (19). It has recently been estimated that the number of patients receiving Vinethene anesthesia now exceeds a quarter of a million (13).…”

“…In this paper is described the method used for the determination of divinyl ether in the blood of anesthetized dogs and man. Some of the results obtained have already been published in papers (3,17,18,19) which include both experimental and clinical studies of divinyl ether. Root has also used the method described for ethyl ether determinations in dogs (12).…”
