The Preparation of H13 Steel for TBM Cutter and the Performance Test Close to Working Condition

Abstract: The material of disc cutters is important to full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM). In recent years, disc cutters were optimized and tested by many scholars all around the world. H13(4Cr5MoSiV1) steel is widely used due to its excellent properties, especially in TBM disc cutters. In this paper, H13 steel with optimized composition was prepared and heat treatment. The high temperature compression of H13 steel was conducted at the temperatures ranging from 100 °C to 700 °C, with strain rate at 0.01 s−1. The str… Show more

“…With tempering at 350 • C, the martensite is transformed into a tempered troostite with a strip shape, and granular carbides gradually precipitate and grow (Figure 12c). The presence of troostite is believed to be beneficial to improving the elastic limit, yield limit and toughness of steel [44]. According to the test results, the tempered troostite phase presents a more positive influence on the fretting wear properties of quenched 25CrNi2MoVE steel, and both the K v value and CoF are at the lowest level of the series tempering temperature.…”

“…It is primarily responsible for the cutting action and wears out during mining. The cutter ring is usually made of hot-work tool steel, which is characterized by high strength and toughness with high hardness and wear resistance [29][30][31]. The other components of the disc cutter already mentioned are necessary for its proper function.…”

“…Due to its favorable mechanical properties, hot-work tool steel is often used for the production of disc cutter rings [4,11,27,[29][30][31]. This steel grade has high hardness, toughness, and abrasion resistance and is therefore well suited to the demanding geological and geotechnical conditions of mechanized rock mining.…”

“…The chemical composition of the H13 steel is shown in table 1. H13 steel was heat treated [1] and then cut into the required sample sizes by the WEDM machine before the tests. Figure 1 shows the microstructure of the steel after metallographic preparation.…”

“…TBM is an internationally advanced tunnel construction machine. It relies on the strong thrust and shearing force to break the rock, and thus achieving tunnel construction [1][2][3]. The tunnel construction using TBMs has little disturbance to surrounding rock and smooth excavation ground, which can effectively reduce the occurrence of geological disasters, and achieve continuous and fast construction.…”
