The presence of atrial fibrillation in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is predictive of mortality: Systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation increased all-cause mortality by double among patients with TTC compared to without it. Our study suggests that the presence of AF in TTC is prognostic for all-cause mortality.

“…Response to letter of the editor "Mortality in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy should also be accounted based on predisposing etiology" Dear Editor, We appreciate the authors' comments on our previous publication (Prasitlumkum et al, 2019). In addition to emerging atrial fibrillation (AF) as an outcome predictor of takotsubo (TC), we agree with the authors that other factors especially etiologies of TC (physical or emotional) could potentially play a role.…”

“…Numerous factors have been found to be associated with adverse outcomes in TC patients such as age, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Kim et al, 2018). Our study also designated a probable risk factor, "AF," which nevertheless may need more studies to establish an adjusted independent association (Prasitlumkum et al, 2019). As the authors mentioned in the letter to the editor, burdens of atrial arrhythmia could be more prevalent in patients with secondary TC due to their comorbidities.…”

“…In the medical literature, Stiermaier et al 23 report that in TS patients, atrial fi brillation is frequent and associated with increased long-term mortality rates. A meta-analysis pro-duced by Prasitlumkun et al 24 suggests that the presence of AF is a prognostic factor for all-cause mortality among patients with TS compared to those lacking it. However, there is no case reported in literature that could defi ne AF as a trigger event.…”

“…Atrial arrhythmias, on the other hand were prevalent in our study population, comprising 10.0% of the overall cohort. A recent metanalysis described the prevalence of atrial fibrillation in TTC ranging from 8.4 to 25.0%, depending upon the average age of the study population [15] , [25] , [26] , [27] , [28] , [29] . Acutely, atrial arrhythmias in TTC is thought to be the result of left atrial dysfunction as well as from a catecholaminergic surge [14] , [30] .…”
