The preservation of genetic resources of the vine requires cohabitation between institutional clonal selection, mass selection and private clonal selection

Abstract: Abstract. Clonal selection allows control of virus diseases and selection of genotypes on agronomic, viticultural or enological criteria. Clonal selection has the major drawback that it impoverishes genetic diversity and exposes growers to environmental instability of clones (genotype X environment interaction). Clonal selection has become the almost unique way of propagating plant material for vineyards, hence threatening the genetic diversity of the grapevine. For major grapevine varieties, some genetic dive… Show more

“…Although the old local varieties lag behind the world varieties in terms of their production value (e.g., yield, climate resilience), market demands for quality and uniqueness clearly require them to be addressed, making clonal selection work particularly valuable, as improvement must be achieved while maintaining the original dominant varietal characteristics [60][61][62].…”

“…Nowadays, plant breeding does not focus on multifactorial change (environment), but on a few traits, as desired by humans. Therefore, phenotypic and genetic diversity is lower in domesticated plants than in their wild relatives [86][87][88][89]. Given the vegetative propagation of grapevines, this reduction is more prone to occur [90].…”

“…Each above-mentioned country running cross breeding programs has its own clonal selection plans led by various realising bodies. Another approach to carry out conservation and selection of grapevine is the methodology followed in Portugal based on the mass conservation/selection of local varieties (Roby et al 2014).…”
