“…pseudomallei , confirming a diagnosis of chronic melioidosis. Multilocus-sequence typing (MLST) of seven housekeeping genes, as described previously [ 3 ], identified the strain as belonging to sequence type 55 (ST55), one of the dominant types in Hainan [ 4 ].…”

“…has been classified as a category B bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of USA [3]. In China, the epidemic areas of melioidosis are mainly in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi province [4, 5]. Isolates from Hainan alone exhibited highly genetic diversity when tested by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) [6].…”

“…Comparison of clinical and environmental isolates using a combination of two discriminant genotyping techniques, multilocus sequence typing and multiple locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLST and MLVA), suggested an environmental origin for some of the cases. These studies were of limited scale, and could not determine the geographic distribution of B. pseudomallei all over the island, but from August to December 2016, Dong et al conducted a more comprehensive environmental B. pseudomallei investigation, covering all 18 counties of Hainan Island [51]. Among 360 sampling sites, 48 (13.3%) were positive for the bacterium, and most of these were located in coastal counties (12/18), which corresponds with the distribution of clinical cases around the island.…”
