The prevalence and incidence of biopsy‐proven lupus nephritis in the UK: Evidence of an ethnic gradient

Abstract: Objective. Renal involvement is a major complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and is a strong determinant of morbidity and mortality. There have been no previous studies of the epidemiology of lupus nephritis. Our aim was to establish the prevalence and incidence of biopsy-proven lupus nephritis in the northwest of England in 2001 and to examine the influence of age, sex, and ethnicity. Conclusion. This first estimate of the prevalence and incidence of biopsy-proven lupus nephritis demonstrates dr… Show more

“…The estimate for LN incidence in the Caucasian population (0.7/100 000) in this study is largely in agreement with LN incidence rates observed in similar populations in the UK (0.4) and Scandinavia (0.5). 13,14 The incidence rate of LN in the IA population markedly exceeded that for Caucasians in this region, but also exceeds LN rates reported in African American or Pacific Islander and Maori populations. 15,16 It should be noted that these figures should be considered minimum estimates of LN incidence based on histological evidence of LN, while the rate of clinically evident LN varies in IA populations but may be up to 20% higher.…”

“…In Pakistan, the percentage of female patients with BPLN was 51.4%, 22 compared with 84.6% in Northwest England. 30 Among Afro-Caribbean and Chinese females, the prevalence rate of LN was highest in those aged 20-39 years, whereas among white and Indo-Asian females, it was highest in those aged 40-59 years. 30 Our analysis revealed that females, especially those aged 20-30 years, represented the majority of patients with BPLN, indicating that renal involvement of SLE was a common complication in female patients of childbearing age.…”

“…The prevalence rates of renal involvement in patients with SLE show regional variation, 4,30 and the renal biopsy rates in these patients also differ between hospitals. In order to objectively demonstrate the epidemiologic prevalence rate of BPLN among patients with SLE and minimize the influence of differing renal biopsy rates, we specifically incorporated cohort studies in which renal biopsies were performed routinely on most patients with LN.…”

“…Contribuyen a la mortalidad la mala respuesta terapéutica, infecciones, compromiso cardiovascular y tromboembolismo. Los mestizos latinoamericanos presentan más frecuentemente NL graves y tempranas [4][5][6][7] . En Chile no disponemos de estudios de incidencia o prevalencia.…”
