“…In this prospective cross-sectional study, the 31% prevalence of sarcopenia in RA patients was similar to previous reports (range 8-88%) included in a meta-analysis by Li, T-H et al 35 This variation in reported prevalence re ects the difference in ethnicities, criteria for diagnosis of sarcopenia, diagnostic modalities, disease duration, disease activity, as well as the functional status of each study population. We used the 2019 criteria for the diagnosis of sarcopenia, 33 while other studies used older criteria.…”

“…Several studies have shown that joint damage and high disease activity are risk factors for low muscle mass in RA [6,20,22,23]. A systematic review with meta-regression analysis showed that disease duration, DAS28, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) score were associated with occurrence of sarcopenia in RA [24]. Studies using experimental murine models of arthritis have revealed a loss of muscle mass derived from active arthritis [25,26].…”

“…In contrast, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in the Elderly (EWGSOP) showed a prevalence of up to 29% in elderly people in the regular community 26 . Previous studies showed that the prevalence of sarcopenia in RA patients was 29.6–43.3% 27 31 , which was significantly higher than normal people. Thus, in our study, the incidence of sarcopenia in female RA patients was 60.0%, which might indicated that sarcopenia were more frequent in women.…”

“…Ange Ngeuleu et al studied 123 RA patients and found that the occurrence of sarcopenia was associated with DAS28, ESR, bone erosion, increased cardiometabolic risk and HAQ 30 . Li et al found that disease duration influenced development of sarcopenia, DAS28 and HAQ predict occurrence 31 . In present study, female RA patients with sarcopenia were usually older, had a longer disease duration and lower BMI than those without sarcopenia, which was consistent with the results of previous studies.…”
