The Prevalence and Severity of Misophonia in a UK Undergraduate Medical Student Population and Validation of the Amsterdam Misophonia Scale

Abstract: Misophonia is a condition of abnormal emotional responses to specific auditory stimuli. There is limited information available on the prevalence of this condition. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of misophonia in an undergraduate medical student population at the University of Nottingham. A secondary aim of this study was to assess the psychometric validity of the Amsterdam Misophonia Scale (A-Miso-S) questionnaire tool in this population. The A-Miso-S was administered online to medical students at… Show more

“…This highlights the putative variability in misophonia diagnosis (and severity). This echoes the rather high prevalence rates of misophonia found by Wu et al 7 (20%) and Naylor et al 9 (49.1%). The latter have stated that only 0.3% had severe cases of misophonia, and that misophonia seemed to affect many people mildly, but only a few severely.…”

“…Prevalence reports of misophonia show large variability and range from 6% to 49.1% [7][8][9] . These differ considerably due to the different assessment methods and criterion that were used to define misophonia.…”

“…A final item is used for free responses and assesses the worst feared consequence of not being able to avoid misophonic triggers. The A-MISO-S was preliminarily validated in a sample of medical students and demonstrated good internal consistency (α = .81; Naylor et al, 2020). As with the MQ, additional studies are needed with the A-MISO-S using community samples in order to VALIDATION OF DUKE MISOPHONIA QUESTIONNAIRE 8 enhance the generalizability of this measure.…”

“…A related limitation to the A-MISO-S is that item generation and refinement was not done using psychometric analyses. Nonetheless, the original A-MISO-S and a revised version have been widely used in misophonia research across multiple countries, suggesting it merits additional psychometric evaluation and is promising as a useful and brief measure (Eijsker et al, 2019;Erfanian et al, 2018Erfanian et al, , 2019aErfanian et al, , 2019bJager et al, 2020;Kluckow et al, 2014;Natalini et al, 2020;Naylor et al, 2020;Quek et al, 2018;Rouw et al, 2017;Schröder et al, 2014).…”
