Background: Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by the inflammation of the airways of the lungs. Worldwide, people are affected by it without distinction for ethnicity, age or gender. Its exacerbation and complications can be prevented by maintaining good control over the condition. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence rate of bronchial asthma among children in the city of Al-Madina, Saudi Arabia. This will also facilitate the study of possible environmental and dietary determinants of bronchial asthma among asthmatic children (1-14 years old) and in evaluating the severity of asthma and its effects on the quality of life. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed from March to May 2018 with a representative sample of Saudi male and female children at the Maternity and Children's Hospital, Al-Madina, Saudi Arabia (N= 339). The age of the children was ≤14 years old. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed and was filled in by parents who satisfied the selection criteria of the study. Results: In the study, 56.8% of the sample were male children. 48.2% of the parents reported that their children have asthma. The body mass index (BMI) of the children between the ages (> 2 years to ≤ 14 years) showed that 83.2% of them were underweight. 35.9% of the total sample took medication for asthma. Passive smoking was the most common environmental risk factor, encountered by 25.78% of the total sample. Egg consumption was the most common dietary risk factor, connected with 11.98% of the total sample. As regards the severity of bronchial asthma, 71.9% of children had not been absent from their schools in this year, and the majority of asthmatic participants did not need to visit the hospital. Conclusion: This study identifies that the prevalence of bronchial asthma among children in Al-Madina was 48.2% of the total sample. Passive smoking was the most widespread environmental risk factor that could trigger asthma symptoms. Moreover, egg consumption was the most common dietary risk factors associated with asthmatic children.

Background Asthma is the most common reason for emergency visits to hospital and loss of productive hours. In Saudi Arabia, asthma affects more than 2 million people and majority of them have uncontrolled asthma with their quality of life adversely being impacted. It is well known that the prevalence of asthma has been increasing in many places around the world in the last few decades. The present review attempted to identify studies on asthma and associated factors in Saudi Arabian population and assess their time trends and regional variation. Methods The titles and abstracts of retrieved articles were compared to delete duplication and irrelevant data. A data collection form was designed to extract several key components from selected articles like bibliographic information on the article, study population, and sample size. Extracted information was grouped appropriately for data analysis. Database search retrieved 71 articles. Applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 40 articles were excluded and 31 qualified full articles were included for the review. Results Among 31 retained studies, Riyadh had the highest publication output followed by Jeddah. Ten studies were based on ISAAC and 5 on non-ISAAC questionnaires while 5 studies were genetic studies conducted to unravel the genetic basis of asthma. Most of the studies were conducted on pediatric subjects of less than 16 years of age. Sample sizes ranged from less than 150 to more than 10000 with study settings being predominantly urban (22 studies). The pooled weighted prevalence rates of asthma, lifetime wheeze, and rhinitis were 14.3% (95% CI: 13.4–15.2), 16.5 (95% CI 15.5–17.4), and 21.4 (95% CI 20.5–22.3), respectively. An increase in asthma prevalence from 1990 to 2000 along with a stabilized or not so significant decline in the prevalence from 2010 to 2016 was observed. Conclusion The prevalence of asthma varied in different regions without any disparity in prevalence in the rural and urban areas of Saudi Arabia. The understanding of genetic variability and recognition of risk factors in asthma patients can greatly help in individualizing the therapy for the management and control of asthma.

Background Asthma is a major noncommunicable disease that affects around 235 million people, including children, globally. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the incidence of childhood asthma continues to increase. The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has attempted to put policies in place to prevent the occurrence of asthma-related complications by encouraging parents to vaccinate their diagnosed asthmatic children with the flu vaccine. To date, however, there have been no studies investigating the use of flu vaccine among asthmatic children in KSA. Our research aims to explore the perception of parents with asthmatic children towards flu vaccination and its effect on the decision to vaccinate their children.
