The Prevalence of Bacteremia in Pediatric Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Guidelines to Reduce the Frequency of Obtaining Blood Cultures

Abstract: Instituting local guidelines that limit the frequency of obtaining blood cultures in pediatric patients with CAP is likely to capture any patient with bacteremia. This study suggests that blood cultures may not need to be routinely obtained in all patients admitted to the hospital with CAP.

“…28 The British Thoracic Society guidelines, updated in 2011, recommend blood culture only in the setting of severe pneumonia sufficient to require PICU admission and do not recommend routine performance of blood culture tests in milder disease. 29 In the era of evidence-based medicine guiding care to reduce utilization and improve outcomes, the benefit of blood cultures in children with mild to moderate, uncomplicated pneumonia, even when hospitalized, is unclear.…”

“…Imami mažiau-siai 2 mėginiai su 30 minučių intervalu prieš antibiotiko suleidimą [11]. Tačiau atsiranda autorių, manančių, jog net smarkiai sumažinus kraujo pasėlių ėmimo dažnį ir imant tik sunkiausiems pacientams, vis tiek galima aptikti daugumą kliniškai svarbių bakteriemijų [13].…”
