The prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity in the general population in China

Abstract: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common condition that is frequently encountered in dental practice. The aim of this multi-centre and cross-sectional study was to establish the prevalence of DH in the general population in China. A total of 6843 subjects were questioned and examined using a triple syringe with a blast of cold air to confirm the diagnosis of DH. The sensitive surface, loss of attachment and gingival recession of sensitive teeth were measured and recorded. Of the 2932 subjects reporting hypers… Show more

“…In this study, the mean number of sensitive teeth peaked at 40–49 years, with similar values in the older age groups of 50–59 years and 60–69 years. This is comparable to other studies on DS with peak ages in the 5th and 6th decades . In this Trinidadian study, there was a tendency for an increased percentage of mean sensitive teeth with age, peaking at 60–69 years.…”

“…Lower prevalence values were found in Nigerian university students (33.8%) 17 and in Turkish students (8.4%) 18 . The age range of our sample coincided with the peak prevalence for CDH in a study that evaluated the 18-44 age group 19 , but it fell short of the range of the peaks of two other studies: 30-39 years 20 and 50-59 years 21 . Thus, the difference between age groups may have contributed to the different prevalence rates between the studies.…”

“…It is a common problem found mainly in adult populations, however, with huge variations in prevalence, ranging from 1% to 98% (Mantzourani M Wang Y et al, 2012). At present, the most widely accepted explanation for DH is hydrodynamic theory (West NX et al, 2013).…”
