The Prevalence of Sensory Deficits, Functional Limitations, and Disability Among Older Southeast Asians in the United States

Abstract: Previous studies found that Vietnamese were the most health disadvantaged when compared to other Asian American groups and Whites. When compared to other refugee populations, the Vietnamese were actually the advantaged group. Our results indicated additional research on the disablement process among Southeast Asians is warranted.

“…For example, several cross-sectional studies suggest that poor health is associated with depression among older community-dwelling Chinese immigrants (Dong, Chang, Wong, & Simon, 2012;Leung et al, 2017;Mui, 1996Mui, , 1999. In a disability prevalence study among middle-aged and older Southeast Asians groups in the United States, Hmong and Cambodian groups were shown to be more likely to suffer from sensory deficit, functional limitation, and disability compared with Vietnamese immigrants (Yang et al, 2012), potentially placing this group at high risk of the negative mental health consequences associated with poor physical health.…”

For example, health outcomes are less favorable for the Hmong and Cambodian groups compared with other Southeast Asians, as well as in comparison with most other ethnic groups in the United States (Cho & Hummer, 2001; Yang, Burr, & Mutchler, 2012).…”

“…14 Cambodian elders in the United States have been shown to have higher levels of social and physical disability, and greater impairment in activities of daily living, as compared to non-Hispanic Whites, Laotians, and Vietnamese. 15 Cambodian psychiatric patients are significantly affected by diabetes and hypertension 16 ; and somatic symptoms and cultural syndromes 17 . The Cambodians' experience of food deprivation may also contribute to their risk for becoming overweight.…”
