The preventive effect of salvianolic acid B on malignant transformation of DMBA-induced oral premalignant lesion in hamsters

Abstract: Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) has been used clinically in Asian countries to improve the microcirculation in the human body. Salvianolic acid B (Sal B), a pure compound extracted from SM, has been reported to be effective against fibrosis and ischemia-reperfusion injury, possibly through its anti-lipid peroxidation action. But the effect of Sal B on oral premalignant lesion and oral carcinogenesis remains unexplored. It is our interest to investigate the chemopreventive effect of Sal B on 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthra… Show more

“…However, in p53 -/-cells, Bcl-2α expression levels components are cytotoxic, the mechanisms behind such effects are still largely unknown. [27][28][29] In this study, we identified for the first time the bioactive components in sage (Salvia libanotica) essential oil and the mechanisms responsible for antitumor effects. The three bioactive components of sage Ly, Te and Ca synergize to inhibit growth of human colon cancer HCT-116 p53 +/+ and p53 -/-cell lines.…”

“…The anticancer effects of Sal-B were also found in 7,12-dimethylbenz-[a]anthracene-(DMBA) induced oral carcinogenesis in hamsters [83]. Experiments showed that Sal-B treatment significantly decreased the oral cancer incidence.…”

“…This tumour closely resembles human oral squamous cell cancer so is an excellent model for morphological studies and for the development of new chemopreventive agents. In this model, dysplasia develops after 6-8 weeks, the tumour appears at 10-12 weeks and large venous and invasive lesions are seen at 12-14 weeks 36,39,45,46 .…”
