Metaphorical Perceptions of Generation Z Music Education Students on the Concept of their Ideal Music Teacher

This research aims to reveal the perceptions of Generation Z music education students regarding the concept of music teachers in their ideals, through metaphors. The research was conducted with 92 Generation Z students studying in the music education departments of different universities in Turkey. The data was collected by having the students complete the sentence, “My ideal music teacher is like…because…”. The answers given were subjected to content analysis and the metaphors that the students produced for the concept were determined. Students produced 50 valid metaphors. These metaphors were grouped under five different categories. The categories determined in line with the metaphors produced by Generation Z music education students were listed from the most given metaphors to the least. As a result of the ranking, it was revealed that the students perceived their ideal music teacher as enlightening-directing and guiding, helpful and informative, loving-nurturing and supportive, necessary and reassuring, and a source of change and happiness. In line with the findings, it was concluded that Generation Z music education students idealized a music teacher who would enlighten and guide them rather than a teacher who conveyed information.

Metaphors are devices that people employ for both poetic purposes and rhetorical elaboration and belong to the realm of extraordinary language. Metaphors are used to connect abstract ideas and information to more concrete experiences, thus making these experiences more familiar and easier to understand. Moreover, metaphors are more than symbolic intellectual processes; they influence the conceptual understanding of our experiences and help define our everyday realities. For education, there is an important and relevant practical connection between the metaphors that teachers employ and their beliefs about teaching and classroom practices. This stems from the notion that metaphors guide one's mental framework. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the metaphors influencing teachers in gifted education, this study specifically asked teachers to describe both their metaphors concerning gifted students as well as those influencing their teaching. In this study, nine different themes were identified. This research demonstrates a clear connection between reported metaphors and how gifted students receive their education from teachers. Participants' answers demonstrate a strong connection between their metaphors and their classroom practices. However, strict adherence to one's root metaphor increases the chance for dogmatism in the classroom and can lead to potentially incoherent classroom differentiation and a potential disconnect between classroom practices and the actual pedagogical needs of the gifted learner.

Bu çalışmada, Türk ve Suriye uyruklu ortaokul öğrencilerinin çevre, okul, öğretmen ve arkadaş kavramlarına yönelik algılarının metaforlar aracılığıyla tespit edilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan fenomenoloji araştırma deseniyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma katılımcıları amaçlı örnekleme türlerinden ölçüt örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiştir. Altıncı ve yedinci sınıf düzeyinde öğrenim görmekte olan gönüllü toplam 23 Göçmen ve Türk öğrenci çalışma grubunu oluşturmuştur. Araştırma verileri, belirlenen kavramların benzetileceği metaforun ve benzetme gerekçesinin yazılacağı cümlelerin yer aldığı metafor formuyla elde edilmiştir. Öğrencilerden elde edilen veriler içerik analizinden yararlanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda öğrenciler tarafından toplam 90 farklı metaforun üretildiği ortaya konulmuştur. Öğrenciler tarafından genellikle çevre kavramı sosyal çevre, okul kavramı güven ortamı, öğretmen kavramı sevgi ve koruyucu, arkadaş kavramı ise sevgi ve yakınlık gösteren metaforlarıyla ilişkilendirilmiştir. Türk ve Suriye göçmeni tüm öğrencilerin çevre, okul, öğretmen ve arkadaş kavramlarına yönelik olumlu metaforlar üreterek, olumlu ilişkilendirmeler yaptıkları belirlenmiştir. Ortaya konulan sonuçlar çerçevesinde çalışmaya ait öneriler sunulmuştur.
