The Production of Biogas From Food Waste

Abstract

Due to the rise in energy crises around the globe and the fear of the exhaustion of non-renewable resources, the world has started focusing on the use of sustainable energy production methods and technologies. One of such technologies is the biogas production method. The production of biogas from food waste is one of the most reliable and effective energy-producing techniques in today's world. Food waste, being organic, has the potential to generate the energy needed to fulfill daily needs. Biogas is produced when food waste is used as raw material and an aerobically converted with the pH value of the content inside the biodigester, which is measured and maintained at a neutral value, and a specific moisture level is also maintained. Anaerobic digestion is very sensitive to changes in pH, and it is important to maintain a pH of 6.7-7.4 for a healthy system. Biogas, formed by the anaerobic digestion of food wastes, makes sustainable, reliable, and renewable energy possible.The study concluded that anaerobic digestion of the food wastes enhanced biogas production, although not significantly, but surely in the future its significance will reach new heights. In this paper, a review of experimental work by different researchers for the generation of biogas from food waste has been outlined. This paper even opens a new avenue for the waste-to-energy method of disposing of food waste. These If treated properly, waste can be utilised for integrated solid waste management. This paper presents findings on the efficiency and significance of food waste utilisation for energy production as biogas.
