The Production of Complex Syntax in Spontaneous Language by 4-Year-Old Children With Hearing Loss

Abstract: Purpose Proficiency with complex syntax is important for language and reading comprehension, and production of complex syntax begins to emerge shortly after a young child begins using two-word combinations. Complex syntax production in preschool children with hearing loss who use spoken language has been explored minimally. The purpose of this study was to compare complex syntax production of 4-year-old children with hearing loss to age-matched and language-matched peers with normal hearing. … Show more

“…The Early Language and Literacy Acquisition in Children with Hearing Loss (ELLA) study is a longitudinal investigation of the growth of spoken language, emergent literacy, and literacy skills of children with hearing loss who use spoken language across preschool and elementary school (Grey et al, in press;Lund, 2020;Lund, et al, 2020;Werfel, 2017Werfel, 2018Werfel et al, 2021). During preschool, children participate in assessment of spoken language, phonological processing, and print knowledge skills at 6-month intervals from age 4 to 6 years.…”

“…Despite early identification of the HL, early amplification, and intervention, many children with HL are behind hearing peers in language, vocabulary, and word-learning outcomes (de Diego-Lázaro et al, 2021;Walker et al, 2019;Werfel et al, 2021Werfel et al, , 2022. Given the positive relationships between language, literacy, and academic outcomes, it is not surprising that some children with HL show lower reading and writing (Breland et al, 2021;Harris et al, 2017) and academic outcomes than their hearing peers (Antia et al, 2009).…”

“…As such, children with a hearing loss of less than 35–40 dB may not receive adequate early intervention, unless speech, language and literacy difficulties are observed by a caregiver, teacher or health professional. This may mean that the child will not receive the necessary intervention until school age, which is likely to result in an increased gap between the child's chronological age and their language abilities (Werfel et al., 2021). These language delays may further impact on academic success at school later in life (Rvachew, 2006) leading to other lifelong impacts such as difficulty finding employment and low self‐esteem (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2001).…”
