The production of short chain fatty acid and colonic development in weaning piglets

Abstract: Weaning process widely affects the small intestinal structure and function in piglets, while the responses of large intestine to weaning stress are still obscure. The purpose of this study was to determine the developmental changes (i.e., short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentrations, growth parameters, crypt‐related indices and antioxidant capacity) in colon of piglet during weaning. Forty piglets were weaned at day 21 and euthanized to collect colonic tissues and digesta samples on day 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14 pos… Show more

“…Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA process in SPSS 25 statistical software (SPSS 20.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) followed by Duncan’s multiple range tests, and the test results were expressed as the mean and standard error of the mean (SEM), where P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant, and 0.05 < P < 0.10 was considered to have a significant trend ( Zhou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The SCFAs in the colon were analyzed according to a previous study ( Zhou et al, 2019 ). One gram of colon digesta was diluted with distilled water, then vortexed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for 15 min.…”

“…Hence, reducing the backfat thickness of the Meishan pig breed by a convenient method, such as feeding probiotics, is an effective way to change this phenotype. Weaning at around 28 to 35 days old is a stressful event which impairs the function of the intestinal and immune systems and further results in the reduced production performance of piglets [ 46 , 47 ]. Furthermore, the nursing phase of piglets after weaning has a profound influence on the growth and development of pigs.…”
