The Prognosis of Occipital Encephalocele

Abstract: SUMMARY Forty‐five infants with occipital encephalocele and 10 with occipital meningocele were admitted for treatment in a 5‐year period. Fourteen with encephaloceles died either before or during operation or very soon afterwards. Twenty‐eight of the survivors had hydrocephalus. There were 11 late deaths. It is concluded that the single most important prognostic factor is the presence or absence of brain matter in the sac of the lesion.
