The prognosis of patients with gastric cancer possessing sex hormone receptors

Abstract: Estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PgR) were immunohistologically investigated in 107 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative resection. Both ER and PgR were detected only in the cancer cell nucleus. The ER positive rate was 27.7% for males and 31.0% for females, while the PgR positive rate was 9.2% for males and 11.9% for females. Clinicopathologically, the ER positive rate was slightly higher in young females and in cases of poorly differentiated gastric cancer. When cumulative s… Show more

“…Their analysis supported the hypothesis that longer exposure to the estrogen effects of either ovarian or exogenous origin may decrease the risk of gastric cancer. On the other hand, Matsui et al [17] reported that, in reviewing the immunohistology of 107 patients with curative resection of gastric cancer, the estrogen receptor-positive rate was slightly higher in younger female patients and in patients with poorly differentiated gastric cancer, and the 10-year cumulative survival rate after surgery was significantly lower in the estrogen receptor-positive cases. The relationship between sex hormones and cancer development needs further investigation.…”

“…However, studies have shown that some primary gastric cancers can have ER/PR positivity. 2 Further, if the primary breast lesion is ER/PR negative, it cannot be used as a marker. Other immunohistochemistry markers that have been used include HER2/neu; gross cystic disease fluid protein (GCDFP-15); CK7, CK8, and CK20; mucin glycoprotein antigens (MUC2), MUC5AC, and MUK6; and caudal-type homeobox transcription factor CDX2.…”

“…When the primary breast tumor is positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER/PRs) and the stomach tumor is ER/PR negative, the diagnosis is established easily. 2 However, studies have shown that some primary gastric cancers can have ER/PR positivity. Further, if the primary breast lesion is ER/PR negative, the same cannot be used as a marker.…”

“…Based on the evidence that ERα is expressed in poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas more frequently than in well differentiated gastric cancer (39)(40)(41)(42)(43), several clinical trials using a partial estrogen antagonist, tamoxifen, have been conducted for the management of ERα-positive gastric cancer patients. However, the results have not been consistent, and the utility of ERα for the treatment of gastric cancer is still inconclusive (21,39,44,45).…”
