The promotion of intrauterine contraception in low- and middle-income countries: a narrative review

Abstract: The evidence base is weak and offers few lessons on what strategies are most effective. The overall impression is that IUD use can be increased in a variety of ways but that progress is hampered by persistent adverse perceptions by both providers and potential clients. Provider enthusiasm is a key to success. The lack of a population impact stems in part from the fact that nearly all interventions are initiated by international organizations, with limited national reach except in small countries, rather than b… Show more

“…37 Although LARC interventions that offer both methods typically result in a ratio of about three implant insertions for each IUD insertion, a sizable minority of women will chose the IUD when met with enthusiastic staff and high-quality counseling. 9 Additional elements of successful LARC interventions highlighted by PSI and MSI include careful coordination of the timing of demand-creation activities and service delivery; provision of removal services; and activities designed to reach poor or underserved women, such as mobile outreach and the provision of free or subsidized services. In line with our findings on the antecedents to LARC adoption shown above, these programs predominantly reached new users.…”

“…This analysis is based on data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs), health facility surveys and telephone interviews with key international family planning stakeholders, as well as findings from recently published literature reviews on enablers and barriers to IUD uptake in low-and middle-income countries. 9,10 Unless otherwise stated, our IUD analyses refer to copper devices and our implant analyses refer to the generic method (including levonorgestrel-and etonogestrel-based implants) rather than to specific brands.…”

“…Intrauterine device (IUD) is considered one of the most acceptable and effective contraceptive methods used. It is widely accepted and used in Egypt at a large scale than any other type of contraception with many advantages over the other types of contraceptive methods including long acting hormonal methods [1] [2].…”

“…To our knowledge and own literature search, there are five main types of IUD, which are commonly used in women worldwide [13]. Beside the ones we chose, there are other IUDs available on the market, but in terms of structure and material, these are not dissimilar to the ones selected for testing in our study (Novo T is made of copper, silver, polyethylene with barium sulfate, and iron oxid (coloring of the threads); Mona Lisa is made of copper and two nylon threads; Gold Luna is made of gold, copper, and polyethylene with barium sulfate; Minerva is made of polyethylene with barium sulfate and a reservoir containing levonorgestrel and silicone, with Iron oxide used as coloring agent; the Chinese ring is made of stainless steel).…”
