The proportional distribution of training by elite endurance athletes at different intensities during different phases of the season

Billy Sperlich,
Manuel Matzka,
Hans-Christer Holmberg

Abstract: The present review examines retrospective analyses of training intensity distribution (TID), i.e., the proportion of training at moderate (Zone 1, Z1), heavy (Z2) and severe (Z3) intensity by elite-to-world-class endurance athletes during different phases of the season. In addition, we discuss potential implications of our findings for research in this field, as well as for training by these athletes. Altogether, we included 175 TIDs, of which 120 quantified exercise intensity on the basis of heart rate and me… Show more

“…This figure illustrates why dichotomous clustering of sports disciplines into categories like endurance or strength is problematic, as it is rare for a sport to be positioned at the extremes. Thus, the typologies in sports encompass several issues that need to be considered, taking into account various factors, which will be described in the following sections ( Sperlich et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Furthermore, the balance between specific , semi-specific (e.g., training on a kayak ergometer for kayakers), and non-specific training (e.g., cycling for speed skaters) represents a critical factor in classifying endurance capabilities. ( Sperlich et al, 2023 ). Lastly, the predominant type of energy metabolism utilized (fat/carbohydrates) holds significance and warrants consideration.…”
