The prospects for hybrid fiber-reinforced Ti-TiB-matrix composites

Abstract: Signifi cant cost reductions in continuously reinforced titanium-matrix composites have enabled their successful insertion into two aerospace applications. Additional applications are being pursued, but reduced anisotropy is required to achieve the broadest impact of this technology. Novel hybrid composites consisting of continuous SiC reinforcements and titanium alloys enhanced with TiB and/or TiC particles are being developed to reduce the anisotropy between longitudinal and transverse properties.

“…When considering Ti alloy use the in aerospace industry, they are often utilized in constructing airframe parts and gas turbine engines parts [2][3][4][5]. In order to meet the present-day demand for improved mechanical properties and to reduce the production costs of Ti alloys, research has been conducted on various Ti MMCs [6][7][8][9][10]. Reinforcements for MMCs are generally introduced in the form of fibers (continuous or discontinuous) or particles [11,12].…”

“…Ti-B modified composites have applications in various sectors such as the automotive industry [20], aerospace [21] and in biomedical / sport [22]. B 4 C reinforced Titanium matrix composites exhibit significantly enhanced properties, such as higher hardness, improved corrosion and wear resistance since it serves as precursor for TiB, TiB 2 and TiC phases [23], [24].…”
