The protective effect of Indian Catechu methanolic extract against aluminum chloride-induced neurotoxicity, A rodent model of Alzheimer's disease

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the commonest neurodegenerative disorder with a wide array of manifestations, courses, and contributing causes. Despite being clinically characterized a long time ago; no treatment has been developed that could improve the pathology or slow down the disease manifestation- so far. Indian Catechu methanolic extract (ICME) has proved to have multiple beneficial effects that support its use in several disorders- especially those with complex etiology. In the present study, we evaluated … Show more

“…e methanol extract of A. catechu showed potential in the management of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease) via the anticholinesterase effect and significant antioxidant effect [91]. Also, the water extract of the plant stem shows acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity with an IC 50 of 0.95 mg/mL [92].…”

“…Synaptic dysfunction and eventually neurodegeneration, particularly within the hippocampus, the entorhinal, the polymodal association cortices, and the basal forebrain [39], are common AD associations. Early in the disease, cholinergic neuron loss, particularly within the basal forebrain, occurs and is a major contributor to cognitive impairment [40][41][42], besides being strongly linked to the severity of dementia [43,44].…”

“…Al is considered the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, with high human exposure anticipated by cooking tools, food antacids, and various industrial applications [71] to produce rubber, lubricants, paints, wood preservatives, pesticides, antiperspirants, and pharmaceuticals. Al is a potentially dangerous neurotoxic metal that can pass through the blood-brain barrier through the iron-binding protein transferrin and is widely distributed in different brain areas [43].…”

“…Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic type of neurodegenerative dementia among the elderly and affects more than 35 million people worldwide (Elmorsy et al 2021). It has been estimated that the number may surge to reach 65.7 million by 2030 (Falode et al 2017; Elmorsy et al 2021).…”
